What is Karthigai?
Karthigai is the day when the Moon is in the Krittika (Karthigai) nakshatra — a star sacred to Lord Murugan and Lord Shiva. It occurs roughly once a month when the moon transits that star cluster.
How many Karthigai days are there in a year?
There are about 12 Karthigai days per year — one per lunar month, whenever the moon passes through the Krittika nakshatra. All dates are listed on this page.
Is Karthigai the same as Karthigai Deepam?
No. Karthigai Deepam is a specific annual festival in the Tamil month of Karthigai (Nov–Dec) celebrated with lamps. The monthly Karthigai star days occur every time the moon is in the Krittika nakshatra — about 12 times a year.
Why is Krittika nakshatra special?
The Krittika star cluster (Pleiades) is considered the birth star of Lord Murugan and is associated with Lord Shiva's cosmic fire. Temple lamp-lighting ceremonies are especially auspicious on Karthigai days.
