What is porutham (10 porutham)?
A traditional method that compares the birth stars (nakshatras) of the bride and groom to judge marriage compatibility. Ten matches are checked: dina, gana, mahendra, sthree deergha, yoni, rasi, rasi athipathi, vashya, rajju and vedha.
How many poruthams should match?
Six or more out of ten is generally considered a good match. But if rajju or vedha porutham is absent, the match is traditionally rejected even when the other counts are high.
Is porutham enough to fix a marriage?
No. A full match also weighs chevvai (Mars) dosham, naga dosham and dasa sandhi, which an astrologer checks. This is a first-level guide only.
