What is porutham?
Porutham (பொருத்தம்) means 'compatibility' or 'agreement.' It is the Tamil system for comparing two horoscopes before marriage. Where Western astrology speaks loosely of 'sign compatibility,' porutham is a precise, rule-based system with 10 specific tests, each evaluating a distinct dimension of the couple's compatibility.
The system is remarkably focused: it uses only the couple's birth nakshatras (lunar mansions) and their associated rashis (zodiac signs). It does not require a complete birth chart with all planetary positions. This simplicity makes porutham accessible, anyone who knows their birth nakshatra can have their compatibility checked.
In practice, families consult a jyotish (Vedic astrologer) who systematically evaluates all 10 poruthams and gives a score. Achieving 7 out of 10 or more is generally considered good. But not all poruthams carry equal weight, Rajju, in particular, is considered non-negotiable by most traditions.
The 10 poruthams in traditional order
Below are all 10 poruthams in the order they are traditionally evaluated. Each porutham tests a specific dimension of compatibility between the bride's and groom's horoscopes.
1. Dina Porutham, day/star compatibility
Dina porutham assesses basic star compatibility by counting the number of nakshatras from the bride's birth nakshatra to the groom's. The count is divided by 9, and the remainder determines compatibility. Certain remainders (typically 2, 4, 6, 8, 0) are favourable, while odd remainders (except 0 and 9) are unfavourable. This porutham reflects the day-to-day harmony between the couple.
2. Gana Porutham, temperament
Gana porutham evaluates temperament compatibility. The 27 nakshatras are divided into three gana groups: Deva (divine), Manushya (human), and Rakshasa (demonic). These are not moral judgments but temperament categories. Deva nakshatras tend toward gentleness, Manushya toward pragmatism, and Rakshasa toward intensity and independence.
| Bride \ Groom | Deva | Manushya | Rakshasa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deva | Excellent | Good | Not favourable |
| Manushya | Good | Excellent | Neutral |
| Rakshasa | Not favourable | Neutral | Good |
3. Mahendra Porutham, prosperity and offspring
Mahendra porutham evaluates the couple's potential for prosperity and healthy children. Count from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's. If the count is 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, or 25, the porutham is satisfied. These numbers represent favourable positions in the cyclic nakshatra order and are believed to promote well-being and lineage.
4. Stree Deergha Porutham, longevity of the wife
Stree Deergha porutham concerns the wife's well-being and longevity. The groom's birth nakshatra should be at least 13 nakshatras away from the bride's (counting forward). This distance ensures that the groom's nakshatra energy does not overwhelm or suppress the bride's. Some traditions accept a minimum of 7 or 9 nakshatras when other poruthams are strongly favourable.
5. Yoni Porutham, physical/biological compatibility
Yoni porutham assesses physical and sexual compatibility. Each nakshatra is associated with an animal symbol, there are 14 animals in total: horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, lion, and mongoose. Animals that are natural enemies produce poor compatibility. Same-animal matches are ideal.
| Match type | Result |
|---|---|
| Same animal | Best, full compatibility |
| Friendly animals | Good, no conflict |
| Neutral animals | Acceptable |
| Enemy animals | Not favourable, Yoni porutham fails |
6. Rasi Porutham, zodiac sign compatibility
Rasi porutham compares the two people's rashi (zodiac sign, determined by the Moon's position). Certain rashi combinations are favourable: the 2-12 position (adjacent signs), 5-9 (trikona/trine), and some 3-11 combinations are considered good. The general rule is that the bride's rashi being 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th from the groom's is favourable. The 6-8 position is generally unfavourable.
7. Rasi Adhipathi Porutham, sign lord compatibility
Rasi Adhipathi porutham examines the ruling planets (adhipathi) of both people's rashis. The two planets must be friends or at least neutral, not enemies. For example, Jupiter and Mars are friends, while the Sun and Saturn are enemies. Planetary friendships follow a fixed table in Vedic astrology, and this porutham ensures that the fundamental planetary energies governing the couple are harmonious.
8. Vasya Porutham, attraction and influence
Vasya porutham evaluates mutual attraction and natural influence between the couple. Certain rashi pairs have a vasya relationship, where one sign naturally attracts or holds sway over the other. For example, Aries (Mesha) has vasya over Leo (Simha) and Scorpio (Vrischika). Mutual vasya, where each sign has influence over the other, is considered ideal.
9. Rajju Porutham, longevity of the husband
Rajju porutham is the single most critical porutham of all ten. The 27 nakshatras are distributed across five rajju groups: Paadha (foot), Ooru (thigh), Udara (stomach), Kanta (neck), and Siro (head). If both people's birth nakshatras fall in the SAME rajju group, Rajju porutham fails, and this is treated as a serious warning against the marriage.
10. Vedhai Porutham, obstacle
Vedhai porutham identifies nakshatra pairs that are natural enemies. Specific nakshatras form vedhai pairs, for example, Ashwini and Jyeshtha are vedhai to each other, as are Bharani and Anuradha, Krittika and Vishakha, and several others. If the bride's and groom's nakshatras are a vedhai pair, this porutham fails, indicating fundamental obstacles in the relationship.
Which poruthams are essential?
Not all 10 poruthams carry equal weight. Tradition groups them into three tiers of importance:
- Non-negotiable: Rajju porutham is the absolute minimum, without Rajju, the marriage is not recommended in most traditions.
- Very important: Dina, Gana, Rasi, and Yoni are considered core poruthams. Failing multiple of these is a strong warning.
- Desirable: Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, and Vedhai strengthen the compatibility further, but failing a single one of these is rarely a dealbreaker.
A score of 7 out of 10 is generally considered good. But the number alone is not sufficient, WHICH poruthams fail is decisive. A score of 8/10 with Rajju failed is worse than 6/10 with Rajju passed, according to most traditions.
How porutham matching works
The porutham system is remarkably simple in its inputs: it uses only the two people's birth nakshatras and their associated rashis (zodiac signs). It does NOT require the full birth chart with planetary positions, houses, and dashas. This makes the system accessible but also less nuanced than a full jathaka analysis (horoscope comparison).
The process is: (1) Determine both people's birth nakshatras from their birth time and place. (2) Identify the associated rashi for each nakshatra. (3) Systematically evaluate all 10 tests. (4) Count how many pass and specifically assess the critical ones (Rajju, Dina, Gana, Rasi, Yoni).
Modern context
Porutham continues to play a central role in Tamil marriage planning. Many families require a porutham check before proceeding with a potential match, whether they live in Tamil Nadu or abroad. The process is the same everywhere, birth nakshatras depend on the time and place of birth, not on where you live now.
The system provides a structured framework for assessing compatibility. It can surface potential challenges and give families confidence in a match. But it does not replace personal judgment, mutual respect, or the many other factors that determine a marriage's success. Most modern jyotishers present porutham as a guiding tool rather than an absolute verdict.
