How are these times calculated?

What is a Tamil panchangam?

A panchangam is the Hindu almanac. It shows the five main parts of each day, tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and weekday, along with daily times such as the good time (nalla neram), rahu kalam, yamagandam, kuligai, horai and gowri panchangam. This page brings today's complete almanac sheet together in one place for any city in the world.

The five elements of each day

Tithiதிதி
The lunar day, the angle between Sun and Moon divided into 30 steps. Governs which ceremonies and activities are considered auspicious.
Varaவாரம்
The weekday and its ruling planet: Sun (Sunday), Moon (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday).
Nakshatraநட்சத்திரம்
The 27 lunar mansions. The Moon passes through one each day. Your birth nakshatra determines tarabalam, the day's personal strength for you.
Yogaயோகம்
The combined longitude of Sun and Moon in 27 parts. Auspicious yogas like Siddha and Amrita suit new ventures; inauspicious ones like Vyatipata are avoided.
Karanaகரணம்
Half of a tithi, each lunar day is split into two karanas from 11 types. They fine-tune which half-days suit specific activities.
