What nakshatra characteristics represent

In Jyotish, a nakshatra is not merely a point on the ecliptic, it is a web of associations. Each lunar mansion has a presiding deity, a ruling planet, a symbol that captures its essence, and a gana that places it in one of three temperaments. Together, they compose a portrait of the qualities tradition ascribes to those born under that star.

These characteristics are not personality tests in any modern sense. They are inherited associations from classical Sanskrit texts, principally the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (6th century CE) and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, that have shaped Tamil astrology for well over a millennium. They describe archetypes and tendencies, not predetermined fates.

The three ganas, Deva, Manushya, and Rakshasa

Every nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas (temperaments). Gana is a significant factor in marriage compatibility (Gana Porutham) and offers a broad indication of a nakshatra's nature.

  • Deva Gana (divine, gentle), Ashwini, Mrigashirsham, Punarpoosam, Poosam, Swathi, Anusham, Thiruvonam, Revathi, Astham. Those with deva nakshatras are described as mild, diplomatic, and inclined toward harmony.
  • Manushya Gana (human, balanced), Bharani, Rohini, Thiruvadhirai, Pooram, Uthiram, Pooradam, Uthiradam, Poorattadhi, Uthirattadhi. Balanced, practical, and adaptable, combining gentleness with determination.
  • Rakshasa Gana (fierce, independent), Krittikai, Ayilyam, Magam, Chithirai, Visakam, Kettai, Moolam, Avittam, Sadhayam. Independent, resolute, and direct. Despite the fierce name, tradition describes them as protectors with strong will, not malevolent.

The planet-nakshatra connection, three stars per planet

Each of the 9 Vedic planets (navagraha) rules exactly 3 nakshatras. The sequence repeats in a fixed cycle: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, running three times across the 27 nakshatras. Nakshatras sharing a ruling planet share certain foundational themes.

PlanetNakshatra 1Nakshatra 2Nakshatra 3
Ketu1, Ashwini10, Magam19, Moolam
Venus2, Bharani11, Pooram20, Pooradam
Sun3, Krittikai12, Uthiram21, Uthiradam
Moon4, Rohini13, Astham22, Thiruvonam
Mars5, Mrigashirsham14, Chithirai23, Avittam
Rahu6, Thiruvadhirai15, Swathi24, Sadhayam
Jupiter7, Punarpoosam16, Visakam25, Poorattadhi
Saturn8, Poosam17, Anusham26, Uthirattadhi
Mercury9, Ayilyam18, Kettai27, Revathi
The cycle Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury repeats three times across the 27 nakshatras.

Notice the pattern: Ketu's three nakshatras (Ashwini, Magam, Moolam) all share an investigative, spiritual energy. Venus's three (Bharani, Pooram, Pooradam) all revolve around beauty, creation, and pleasure. The Sun's three (Krittikai, Uthiram, Uthiradam) all carry a strong sense of righteousness. Understanding the planet behind your nakshatra adds another layer of insight.

How nakshatra characteristics are used in practice

The classical characteristics are not merely interesting to read, they have practical applications in several of panchangam's daily and life-decision functions.

  • Naming (namakaranam), your pada within the nakshatra determines the starting syllable for your name. Each quarter has its own set of syllables.
  • Compatibility (porutham), marriage compatibility assessments include gana matching (Deva-Deva, Manushya-Manushya, etc.) and yoni (animal symbol). 10 poruthams are tested in total.
  • Daily timing (tarabalam), your birth nakshatra compared with the day's nakshatra produces a daily strength reading across 9 tara levels.
  • Muhurtham selection, certain nakshatras suit specific purposes: Rohini and Uthiram are auspicious for marriage, Ashwini for travel, Punarpoosam for new beginnings.

Important caveat

A person is far more than their birth nakshatra. In the full Jyotish tradition, the entire birth chart is considered, ascendant, planetary positions, dasha periods, and transits. Nakshatra characteristics are one layer among many.
