The confusion
Both tarabalam and chandrabalam measure whether the Moon's current position is personally favourable for you. Both use your birth Moon position as the starting point. So what is the difference, and which one matters more?
Many people check only one and ignore the other. Others assume the two terms are synonymous. Neither is correct. Tarabalam and chandrabalam are two independent systems that measure the Moon's position with different units and on different scales. Understanding the difference helps you know what to actually check, and when.
What is tarabalam?
Tarabalam (tara = star, balam = strength) is calculated by counting from your birth nakshatra to the day's prevailing nakshatra. The result is a number from 1 to 27, reduced to one of 9 taras via modulo 9. The cycle repeats three times across the 27 nakshatras.
| No. | Tara | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Janma | Mixed ◐ |
| 2 | Sampat | Good ● |
| 3 | Vipat | Avoid ○ |
| 4 | Kshema | Good ● |
| 5 | Pratyari | Avoid ○ |
| 6 | Sadhaka | Good ● |
| 7 | Vadha | Avoid ○ |
| 8 | Mitra | Good ● |
| 9 | Parama Mitra | Good ● |
What is chandrabalam?
Chandrabalam (chandra = Moon, balam = strength) assesses the Moon's strength based on which rashi (zodiac sign) the Moon currently occupies relative to your birth rashi. The rashi system has 12 positions, and the Moon stays in each rashi for about 2.5 days.
| Houses from birth rashi | Chandrabalam |
|---|---|
| 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11 | Favourable ● |
| 2, 5, 9 | Neutral ◐ |
| 4, 12 | Unfavourable ○ |
| 8 (chandrashtamam) | Highly unfavourable |
Chandrabalam changes more slowly than tarabalam because rashis are broader than nakshatras. However, the worst chandrabalam position, chandrashtamam, is traditionally weightier than even the worst tara.
The key difference
| Tarabalam | Chandrabalam | |
|---|---|---|
| System | Nakshatra (27 divisions) | Rashi (12 divisions) |
| Changes | Roughly daily | Every 2–3 days |
| Scale | 9 levels (5 good, 3 bad, 1 mixed) | 4 categories (good, neutral, bad, chandrashtamam) |
| Input | Birth nakshatra → day's nakshatra | Birth rashi → Moon's current rashi |
| Granularity | Fine-grained, daily nuance | Broader, longer periods with heavier consequences |
Which takes priority?
Classical texts are not unanimous, but the most widely accepted rule of thumb is: both should ideally be favourable. If you are forced to choose, chandrabalam should take precedence for major life events, particularly to avoid chandrashtamam.
- Weddings, griha pravesam, business launches, check both. Chandrashtamam is an absolute blocker.
- Daily choices (contracts, travel, meetings), tarabalam is sufficient for most people.
- If tarabalam is unfavourable but chandrabalam is favourable, cautious optimism. Postpone only the most critical items.
- If chandrabalam is unfavourable (especially chandrashtamam), postpone regardless of tarabalam.
Worked example
Person born with the Moon in Rohini nakshatra (rashi: Rishaba / Taurus). Today's Moon is in Punarvasu nakshatra (rashi: Mithuna / Gemini).
Worked example
Tarabalam calculation
Rohini is nakshatra no. 4. Punarvasu is nakshatra no. 7.
- Count
- 7 - 4 + 1 = 4
- Reduce
- ((4 - 1) mod 9) + 1 = 4
- Tara
- 4 = Kshema
From Rohini to Punarvasu, both included.
Tara no. 4 in the cycle.
Favourable, prosperity and safety.
Tarabalam gives Kshema (favourable).
Worked example
Chandrabalam calculation
Birth rashi: Rishaba (Taurus). Moon's current rashi: Mithuna (Gemini).
- House count
- Mithuna is the 2nd house from Rishaba
- Assessment
- House 2 = neutral
Rishaba = 1, Mithuna = 2.
Neither favourable nor unfavourable.
Chandrabalam is neutral (2nd house).
When to check which
Quick daily check
For everyday decisions like scheduling meetings, signing contracts or taking short trips, tarabalam is sufficient. Check your tara for the day and plan new ventures on days with favourable taras (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra, Parama Mitra).
Major life events
For weddings, house-warming (griha pravesam), business launches or naming ceremonies, check both. Find a date where tarabalam is favourable AND chandrabalam is favourable (houses 1, 3, 6, 7, 10 or 11). Avoid the chandrashtamam period entirely.
During chandrashtamam
When the Moon is in your 8th house (chandrashtamam), avoid new beginnings regardless of tarabalam. Even a Parama Mitra day does not override chandrashtamam. Wait until the Moon has left your 8th house.
