What is rasi palan?

Rasi means zodiac sign. Palan means result or effect. Rasi palan is the daily, weekly, or monthly forecast based on where the Moon sits relative to your birth sign, your janma rashi.

When you see 'rasi palan' in a Tamil newspaper, on TV, or online, it is a forecast for each of the 12 zodiac signs. It tells you how the day is expected to go, based on the Moon's current position in the zodiac.

Moon-based, not Sun-based

The biggest difference between Tamil rasi palan and Western horoscopes is the foundation. Western horoscopes use your Sun sign, the tropical zodiac sign the Sun occupied at your birth. Tamil astrology uses your Moon sign, the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth.

Because the Sun spends about 30 days in each sign, Western weekly forecasts change slowly. The Moon spends only about 2.5 days in each sign, so the daily rasi palan shifts far more often. This is why your rasi palan can be good on Monday and difficult on Wednesday, the Moon has moved to a different house.

The 12 houses and their meanings

Rasi palan is built on the bhava system, the 12 houses. When the Moon passes through a particular house as counted from your birth sign, it carries a traditional effect. Your birth sign is always house 1 (janma), and the other houses are counted from there.

Favourable and unfavourable transit houses

Not all houses are equal. Tradition groups them into four tiers based on how favourable the Moon's transit is.

  • Favourable (good): Houses 3, 6, 10, 11, days of energy, victory, professional progress, and gains.
  • Mixed: House 1 (janma), caution advised, neither clearly good nor bad.
  • Neutral: Houses 2, 5, 7, 9, neither especially favourable nor unfavourable, but specific themes may be active.
  • Unfavourable: Houses 4, 8, 12, obstacles, loss, and the dreaded chandrashtamam (house 8).

How our site computes rasi palan

Most newspapers and TV channels deliver generic rasi palan written by an astrologer. Our site does something different: we compute the Moon's actual astronomical position.

  1. The Moon's longitude is calculated using the Meeus lunar algorithm, the same mathematics used by astronomical almanacs.
  2. The Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted to convert from tropical to sidereal longitude.
  3. The sidereal longitude reveals which of the 12 sidereal zodiac signs (rashis) the Moon currently occupies.
  4. When you select your birth sign, we count the houses and show your current transit position.

The result is astronomically precise: you can see when the Moon leaves one sign and enters the next, down to the minute. It is not a generic text, it is a computed position.

Limitations of generic rasi palan

Whether rasi palan comes from a newspaper, an app, or our own calculator, it has a fundamental limitation: it applies to everyone with the same birth sign, roughly 1/12th of the population.

In reality, an individual horoscope depends on far more factors:

  • Lagnam (ascendant), the zodiac sign rising over the horizon at your birth, which adjusts all house placements.
  • Dasha (planetary periods), the current planetary period in your birth chart, which determines which planets are active.
  • Individual house placements, where all nine planets (navagraha) stood at your birth and how they aspect each other.
  • Gochara with multiple planets, not just the Moon's transit, but also the transits of Saturn, Jupiter, and other slow-moving planets.

How to use rasi palan in practice

Find your birth sign

Your rasi palan sign is your Moon sign (janma rashi), not your Western Sun sign. You find it from your birth nakshatra, the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born. Each nakshatra belongs to a specific rashi.

Read the transit position

Once you know your birth sign, you can see which house the Moon currently passes through. If the Moon is in your 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th house, it is a favourable day. If it is in your 4th, 8th, or 12th house, caution is advised for new beginnings.

Combine with other elements

Rasi palan is one element in a larger picture. For a full daily assessment, you can combine it with tarabalam (daily star strength based on your nakshatra) and chandrashtamam (the specific house 8 check). All three use the Moon's position, but in different ways.
