What is namakaranam?
Nama means name. Karanam means creation. Namakaranam is the formal naming of a newborn child, the ceremony in which the baby receives its first name according to Vedic tradition.
Namakaranam is one of the sixteen samskaras, the life rites that mark transitions from conception to death. It is the sixth samskara in the sequence and one of the most widely practised, even among families who do not observe all sixteen rites.
The ceremony is traditionally held on the 11th or 12th day after birth, when mother and child are considered ritually purified after the postpartum period. In some families the 16th, 21st, or 28th day is chosen, or even a later date if a more auspicious muhurtham falls better. The essential requirement is that the day is astrologically favourable.
Birth nakshatra and naming syllables
The heart of namakaranam is the connection between the child's birth nakshatra and the first letter of the name. When the child is born, the exact time and place are noted. A jyotish (astrologer) calculates which nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of birth, this is the child's janma nakshatra (birth star).
Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four padas (quarters). Each pada has a designated starting syllable (aksharam). The pada is determined by the Moon's exact position within the nakshatra. The child's name should begin with the syllable corresponding to the birth nakshatra and pada.
All 27 nakshatras and their starting syllables
The table below shows the four starting syllables for each nakshatra, one per pada. Find the child's birth nakshatra and the relevant pada to see which letter the name should begin with.

Timing the ceremony
Namakaranam is timed to an auspicious muhurtham. The requirements are less strict than for a wedding muhurtham, but there are still guidelines:
- Preferred tithis: Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), and Trayodashi (13th), in shukla paksha (waxing phase).
- Preferred weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are considered auspicious.
- Preferred nakshatras: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashirsham, Punarpoosam, Poosam, Astham, Swathi, Thiruvonam, and Revathi.
- Avoid Rahu Kalam: the ceremony should not begin during Rahu Kalam.
- Avoid new moon (amavasai) and eclipses.
The role of the horoscope, jathakam and name selection
When the child is born, the family has a jathakam (birth chart) prepared based on the exact time and place of birth. The jathakam establishes not only the janma nakshatra and pada, but also the lagna (ascendant), planetary positions, and dashas (planetary periods).
What the jyotish examines
- Janma nakshatra and pada, determines the starting syllable for the name.
- Lagna (ascendant), some families choose a syllable from the lagna nakshatra as an alternative.
- Navamsa position, the 9th divisional chart that refines the pada.
- Doshas, if the jathakam shows specific doshas (e.g. Mangal Dosha), a name with a protective syllable may be recommended.
It is important to understand that the jyotish recommends syllables, not complete names. The family chooses the actual name, provided it begins with the correct starting syllable.
Modern adaptations
Today, many Tamil families blend tradition and modernity. Here are some common adaptations:
- The family picks a name they like and then checks whether it begins with an acceptable syllable from the child's nakshatra.
- If the desired name does not fit, the nakshatra syllable is used as a ritual name (for religious contexts), while the preferred name is used daily.
- Diaspora families combine Tamil naming with local naming conventions, for example, a Tamil first name with a local middle-name tradition.
- Some families use the nakshatra syllable as the initial letter and choose an internationally viable name, for example, the syllable 'Ka' can yield the name 'Karthik' or 'Kavya'.
How to find your child's birth nakshatra using our tool
To find the correct starting syllable, you need to know the child's exact birth nakshatra and pada. This requires the Moon's sidereal position at the moment of birth.
- Open the panchangam for the child's date of birth.
- Check which nakshatra the Moon occupies at the exact time of birth, not at sunrise, but at the clock time of birth.
- Identify the pada (quarter) within the nakshatra.
- Look up the corresponding starting syllable in the table above.
Our panchangam shows the day's nakshatra and transition times, so you can find which nakshatra was prevailing at any given clock time. For precise pada calculation, however, it is recommended to consult a jyotish with the exact birth time.
