What counts as 'starting' a business?

In Tamil tradition, it is not the date on a certificate that matters - it is the first defining act. The moment when the business first meets the world: the first customer who walks in, the first contract signed, the first rupee earned.

For a shop owner, this is the instant the doors open and the first customer steps inside. For an entrepreneur abroad, it might be the moment the company incorporation is filed or the first partnership agreement is signed. Some families supplement the timing with a puja at the workplace - a brief ceremony with lamps, flowers, and prayer - but the puja is a supplement, not the muhurtham act itself.

The key is to choose one act and time it deliberately. The muhurtham tradition does not require the entire day to be perfect - only that the defining moment hits an auspicious window.

Panchangam elements for business muhurtham

A business muhurtham uses the same five panchangam elements as a wedding muhurtham - tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, and vara (weekday) - but with different preferences. Commerce calls for growth, not fertility; momentum, not stability.

Tithis - growth and expansion

The auspicious tithis for business are the growth tithis - those in the waxing phase that represent expansion. Dvitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Dashami (10th), Ekadasi (11th), and Trayodashi (13th) are the most recommended. Avoid Ashtami (8th), Navami (9th), and Chaturdashi (14th), which carry combative or concluding energy.

Nakshatras - the prosperity stars

Ten nakshatras are considered especially auspicious for commerce and new ventures: Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushyami, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, and Revati. What they share is an association with prosperity, skill, trade, or blessing.

Karana - avoid Visti

Visti (also called Bhadra) karana is always avoided for new beginnings. It is considered obstructive and inauspicious. Check the karana for your planned day.

Weekday - Mercury and Jupiter

Wednesday (Mercury - commerce, communication) and Thursday (Jupiter - wisdom, blessing) are the strongest weekdays for business. Monday (Moon - public favour) is also good. Avoid Tuesday (Mars - conflict) and Saturday (Saturn - delay).

Rahu Kalam and Nalla Neram - the time filters

No matter how well tithi and nakshatra align, the first transaction must never fall within Rahu Kalam. This is the hardest filter.

Rahu Kalam is the daily period of approximately 90 minutes ruled by Rahu - the shadow planet associated with confusion and loss. No new beginning should take place in this window. Nalla Neram (the good time) is the opposite: periods of positive planetary influence - the ideal frame for your first act.

Abhijit Muhurtam - the universally auspicious window at solar noon - is a reliable fallback. If nothing else fits, you can almost always find an auspicious moment at the sun's highest point. Abhijit overrides Rahu Kalam, so even on a day with overlap, this window remains usable.

Month preferences

Not all Tamil months are equally auspicious for new ventures. The tradition favours months with growth energy and avoids those with restrictive or ascetic character.

  • Chithirai (April-May) - the year's beginning, fresh energy.
  • Vaikasi (May-June) - continued growth season.
  • Aani (June-July) - peak of summer, auspicious for trade.
  • Thai (January-February) - after Pongal, a month of prosperity.

Avoid Aadi (July-August), traditionally a month of restraint, and Purattasi (September-October), devoted to religious austerity.

How business muhurtham differs from wedding muhurtham

A wedding muhurtham demands that all five panchangam elements align, plus horoscope matching between bride and groom. A business muhurtham is more forgiving. There is no horoscope matching. Yoga and karana matter, but they weigh less than tithi, nakshatra, and weekday.

Diaspora reality - a prioritised checklist

If you live abroad and are starting a business, you can rarely match all criteria. The registration office has fixed hours, your investor has a deadline, and your landlord wants you to open on the 1st. Tradition recognises this reality - it asks for your best effort, not perfection.

Here is a prioritised hierarchy - from most critical to most flexible:

  1. Avoid Rahu Kalam for the first act (absolute requirement).
  2. Choose a favourable weekday - Wednesday or Thursday is strongest.
  3. Aim for a growth tithi (Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Dashami, Ekadasi).
  4. Check the nakshatra - a prosperity nakshatra is a bonus, not a requirement.
  5. Avoid Visti karana - check the panchangam for the day.
  6. Time the act within Nalla Neram or Abhijit Muhurtam if possible.
  7. Choose a favourable month, if you have that luxury.

Worked example: evaluating a shop opening

Let us evaluate a hypothetical opening day for a Tamil restaurant in Copenhagen.

Worked example

Restaurant opening, Copenhagen - Thursday 15 January 2026

An entrepreneur wants to open their restaurant and serve the first customer at 11:30. Is the timing auspicious?

Weekday
Thursday (Jupiter)

Favourable - Jupiter represents wisdom and blessing.

Tithi
Dashami (10th tithi)

Favourable - a growth tithi in shukla paksha (waxing moon).

Nakshatra
Hasta

Favourable - one of the ten prosperity nakshatras.

Karana
Taitila

Favourable - not Visti.

Rahu Kalam (Copenhagen)
13:18 - 14:33

11:30 is well outside Rahu Kalam.

Abhijit Muhurtam
12:04 - 12:32

11:30 is just before - but not within - Abhijit.

Nalla Neram
10:48 - 12:18 (morning)

11:30 falls within Nalla Neram.

All major criteria are met: favourable weekday, growth tithi, prosperity nakshatra, no Rahu overlap, and the act falls within Nalla Neram. A strong day to open.

The timings in this example are illustrative. Use our calculation engine to get precise values for your city and date.

How our engine helps

Our panchangam engine calculates Rahu Kalam, Nalla Neram, tithi, nakshatra, and Abhijit Muhurtam for any city - including those far from Tamil Nadu. Before planning your business launch, you can:

  1. Look up your city on the Rahu Kalam page and note the day's window.
  2. Check Nalla Neram for favourable periods.
  3. See tithi and nakshatra on the day's panchangam page.
  4. Compare multiple days to find the best combination.

Remember: you do not need to wait for the perfect day. Find a day that meets the top 2-3 priorities in the checklist, and take the leap.
