What is Abhijit Muhurtam?

In Tamil tradition, daylight is divided into 15 muhurta periods, and the 8th is the most powerful. It is called Abhijit Muhurtam and falls exactly at midday, when the Sun is at its highest.

The name Abhijit means 'the invincible' and comes from the nakshatra (lunar mansion) of the same name. This nakshatra is ruled by Vishnu, the preserver, and is considered so auspicious that it outshines most inauspicious influences. In the panchangam system the period has inherited this status: it is the one time of day where most traditions agree you can safely begin something new.

Abhijit Muhurtam is not tied to any particular weekday or planetary ruler. It is universal, every daylight has one. That makes it the most reliable fallback when other auspicious windows do not fit your schedule.

How is it calculated?

The calculation starts with two observations: the exact time of sunrise and sunset at your location. The daylight, everything between sunrise and sunset, is divided into 15 equal muhurta periods. The 8th period is Abhijit Muhurtam.

Because the 8th period is always the middle one of 15, it is by definition centred on solar noon (the midpoint between sunrise and sunset). That makes the calculation simple: find the midpoint, then subtract and add half a muhurta.

Worked example

Chennai, January 2026

Sunrise 06:35, sunset 18:00. Where is Abhijit Muhurtam?

Daylight
685 minutes

18:00 − 06:35 = 11 hours 25 minutes

One muhurta
≈ 46 minutes

685 ÷ 15 = 45.7 minutes

Solar noon
12:18

Midpoint of 06:35 and 18:00

Half muhurta
≈ 23 minutes

46 ÷ 2 = 23 minutes

Abhijit Muhurtam
11:55 – 12:40

12:18 minus 23 min → 11:55. 12:18 plus 23 min → 12:41, rounded 12:40.

Abhijit Muhurtam in Chennai in January 2026 is approximately 11:55 – 12:40, a 45-minute universally auspicious window at midday.

Does it override Rahu Kalam?

Yes, most traditions agree that Abhijit Muhurtam overrides Rahu Kalam. But it does not override Yamagandam.

This is the most debated point in Tamil time-planning. Some families treat Abhijit as untouchable, it trumps everything. Others are more cautious and avoid it when Yamagandam overlaps. The broad consensus in Tamil practice is a middle ground: Abhijit is strong enough to neutralise Rahu Kalam, but Yamagandam is a different kind of inauspiciousness, associated with Yama, the god of death, and is respected separately.

When do Abhijit and Rahu Kalam overlap?

Because Abhijit always falls at midday, the overlap depends on the weekday. Rahu Kalam shifts to different times from day to day. In Chennai in January, the two overlap most on Wednesday and Friday, when Rahu Kalam falls closest to noon.

In practice, only Wednesday and Friday are days where the Abhijit override rule is relevant, the other days have Rahu Kalam too far from noon to overlap.

Abhijit changes with your location

Because Abhijit is calculated from sunrise and sunset, the window changes with latitude and season. The shorter the day, the shorter each muhurta, and therefore Abhijit. In tropical cities like Chennai, the window is fairly stable throughout the year. In northern cities like Copenhagen, it can range from under 30 minutes in winter to over an hour in summer.

The difference between Abhijit Muhurtam and Nalla Neram

Both are 'good times', but they come from entirely different systems. Nalla Neram is based on the Gowri Panchangam (8 daylight segments with planetary rulers) and gives up to four good segments per day. Abhijit Muhurtam is based on the muhurta system (15 daylight segments) and gives one window.

Duration≈ 30–70 min≈ 75–110 min per segment
Overrides Rahu?YesNo, Rahu trumps Nalla Neram
Changes with weekday? No, always at noonYes, rulers rotate
Comparison: Abhijit vs. Nalla Neram

The two systems can overlap: this happens when a Nalla Neram segment stretches across noon. When they do overlap, you have a doubly auspicious period.

When should you rely on Abhijit Muhurtam?

Think of Abhijit as your fallback plan, not your first choice. If you can find a Nalla Neram segment that lies outside all three avoid-windows, that is the cleanest solution. But when your schedule does not fit any of the clean segments, Abhijit Muhurtam is the tradition's answer.

  1. Check Nalla Neram first, a clean segment is always best.
  2. If no clean segments fit your schedule, find Abhijit Muhurtam.
  3. Confirm Yamagandam does not overlap, Abhijit only overrides Rahu.
  4. Use the window for a symbolic start: write the first line, make the first call.
  5. If Abhijit is too short (under 30 min in winter), consider moving to a different day.
