الأسئلة الشائعة

What is Ekadasi?

Ekadasi is the 11th day of the lunar fortnight. There are two each month — one in the waxing half, one in the waning half. It is a sacred fasting day for Vishnu devotees.

How many Ekadasi days are there in a year?

There are about 24 Ekadasi days in a year — two per lunar month. Some years have 25 when a leap month is added. All dates are listed on this page.

What do people do on Ekadasi?

Most devotees fast on Ekadasi — avoiding grains, beans and non-vegetarian food. They spend the day in prayer, reading scripture and visiting temples.

Why is Ekadasi important?

According to the Puranas, the goddess Ekadasi was born from Lord Vishnu to fight evil. Fasting on this day is said to cleanse the mind and bring blessings from Vishnu.
