What is Pradosham?

Pradosham (பிரதோஷம்) is Shiva's twilight worship, occurring on the 13th tithi (trayodashi, திரயோதசி) of each lunar fortnight. The word pradosha means 'twilight' in Sanskrit, the time when day meets night. Worship takes place in a specific window around sunset, not all day. There are two Pradosham days per lunar month: Shukla Pradosham (tithi 13, waxing moon) and Krishna Pradosham (tithi 28, waning moon).

Pradosham is unique among recurring observances because it is not an all-day fast like Ekadasi, but an evening worship. The focus is on the cosmic moment when Shiva dances his twilight dance (Sandhya Tandava), the moment when he is most accessible.

Pradosha Kala, the twilight window

Pradosha kala is the time window during which worship should take place. It is defined as the period 1½ hours before and after sunset, typically around 4:30–7:00 PM local time, but it varies with latitude and season.

Worked example

Example: Pradosha kala in Chennai vs. Copenhagen

Calculate pradosha kala from the sunset in your city.

Chennai sunset (January)
5:52 PM IST

Pradosha kala: 4:22–7:22 PM

Chennai sunset (June)
6:35 PM IST

Pradosha kala: 5:05–8:05 PM

Copenhagen sunset (January)
4:15 PM CET

Pradosha kala: 2:45–5:45 PM

Copenhagen sunset (June)
9:55 PM CEST

Pradosha kala: 8:25–11:25 PM

Pradosha kala shifts dramatically with latitude and season. In northern latitudes during summer, it can fall as late as 8–11 PM.

The seven types of Pradosham

Pradosham's character varies with the day of the week. Each day gives it a special name and significance:

WeekdayPradosham nameSignificance
SundayBhanu PradoshamHealing, health. Surya + Shiva.
MondaySoma PradoshamVery powerful. Monday = Shiva's day. Chandra's (Moon's) blessing.
TuesdayBhauma PradoshamCourage, freedom from debt and enmity.
WednesdaySaumya PradoshamWisdom, intellect, education.
ThursdayGuru PradoshamSpiritual growth, guru's blessing.
FridayBhrigu PradoshamProsperity, family happiness.
SaturdaySani PradoshamThe most powerful. Removes Saturn's (Sani) negative influence. Strongly recommended for Sani dasha periods.
The seven Pradosham types by weekday.

Sani Pradosham (Saturday) is the most emphasized. According to legend, Saturn (Sani) worshipped Shiva on a Pradosham evening to break a curse, and Shiva blessed him. Therefore Pradosham on a Saturday is considered the best day to mitigate Saturn's planetary influence (Sani dosha).

Shukla vs. Krishna Pradosham

Krishna Pradosham (13th tithi of the waning fortnight, tithi 28) is also called Maha Pradosham and is generally considered more powerful than Shukla Pradosham (tithi 13). The logic is that the waning moon symbolizes renunciation and withdrawal, qualities that resonate with Shiva's ascetic nature.

In practice, many observe both Pradosham days, but if one can only observe one, the choice is typically Krishna (Maha) Pradosham.

The Pradosham ritual

  1. Fast from sunrise (optional but common). Many fast until sunset and break with fruit.
  2. Bathe and purify before pradosha kala begins.
  3. Visit a Shiva temple during pradosha kala. Worship Nandi (Shiva's bull, standing before the shrine) first.
  4. Perform abhishekam (bathing ceremony for the Shiva lingam) with water, milk, sandalwood paste, kumkum.
  5. Walk pradakshina (circumambulation): light lamps, chant Shiva mantras (Om Namah Shivaya).
  6. Special tradition: walk halfway around the shrine, turn back at Gomukhi (the northern corner), walk back, called 'Somasukta Pradakshinam'.
  7. Break the fast after puja with fruit, milk, or a light dinner.

Pradosham and your city

The Pradosham date is determined, like all tithi-based observances, by the tithi prevailing at sunrise. The pradosha kala window, however, is calculated from sunset. Both are city-specific.

The date rarely varies between cities (trayodashi typically lasts over 24 hours), but pradosha kala can shift significantly, especially between tropical and northern cities, where sunset can differ by hours.

Pradosham in the Tamil tradition

  • Pradosham is deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu, where Shiva temples dominate. The five Pancha Bhuta Sthalas (Chidambaram, Thiruvanaikaval, Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Rameswaram) all hold grand Pradosham celebrations.
  • At Chidambaram temple, Nataraja abhishekam is performed during pradosha kala, Shiva's cosmic dance in the twilight.
  • Thiruvannamalai holds Maha Pradosham with Girivalam (circumambulation of Arunachala hill).
  • Home Pradosham puja: many Tamil families light a lamp before a Shiva image and chant Rudram during pradosha kala.
  • Tamil Pradosham calendar: most Tamil panchangam publishers mark Pradosham with a special notation.
