The short answer: two buckets

A panchangam mixes two kinds of information. One follows your location. The other is the same everywhere.

Think of it as two buckets. In one bucket sits everything that is calculated from sunrise and sunset. Those two moments depend on where you are standing, so everything in this bucket changes with your location.

In the other bucket sits everything built on where the Sun and Moon actually are in the sky. They are in the same place at the same instant, no matter where you look from. So everything in this bucket is the same for everyone.

Bucket 1: follows your location

Sunrise is local. The sun rises earlier in Chennai than in Copenhagen. And it stays up longer in a northern summer than in southern India. Everything built on sunrise and sunset is therefore local.

Here is the complete list of panchangam elements that change with your location:

  • Rahu kalam, yamagandam and kuligai, one eighth of daylight each.
  • Gowri panchangam, eight time-quality segments of daylight. The order is the same, but the clock times are local.
  • Horai, twelve planetary hours of daylight. The planet order is the same, but the length of each hour is local.
  • Abhijit muhurtam, the auspicious midday window. It follows the sun timings.
  • Nalla neram, the good hours. They are derived from gowri, so they follow along.
  • Lagnam, the ascendant in a birth chart. It changes with location and minute.
  • Moonrise and moonset, the Moon is seen from your location, so the times are local.

Bucket 2: the same everywhere

The Moon's and the Sun's position in the sky is the same at the same instant, no matter where on Earth you look from. It is like pointing at a star, everyone points to the same place.

So these elements are the same worldwide:

  • Tithi, the lunar day. It depends on the angle between Sun and Moon.
  • Nakshatra, the star group the Moon sits in.
  • Yoga, a calculation from the Sun's and Moon's longitude.
  • Karana, half of a tithi.
  • The Tamil date and month, they are defined astronomically, not locally.
  • Festival days, most fall on a particular tithi or nakshatra, so they are the same.
  • Disha Shool (Soolam), it is based on the weekday, which is the same everywhere.

Worked example: three cities, same day

Let us see it in practice. Take Thursday 15 January 2026 and compute the panchangam for Chennai, Copenhagen and Toronto. Everything is calculated by this site's own engine.

Thursday 15 January 2026. The first six rows change. The last two are the same (disha shool) or close (moonrise still local).

Look at the table. Sunrise, sunset and every window are different. But disha shool is the same, Thursday is always south. And tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are also the same, because they depend on the Moon's and the Sun's position, not on the sun at your horizon.

Gowri panchangam abroad

Gowri panchangam divides daylight into eight segments, four good and four bad. The order is the same everywhere. The clock times are not.

Each segment has a fixed name: Laabham (good), Udvegam (bad), Shubham (good) and so on. The order is determined by the weekday, and the weekday is the same worldwide.

But the segments are each one eighth of the daylight, just like rahu kalam. So in Chennai, where the day is 11 hours 26 minutes, each segment is about 86 minutes. In Copenhagen, where the day is 7 hours 41 minutes, each segment is only 58 minutes.

If you want to know whether a particular time is auspicious and you use gowri panchangam, you need your own city's time division, not Chennai's.

Horai abroad

Horai divides daylight into twelve equal parts, where each planetary hour is ruled by one of the seven classical planets. The order is fixed: it always starts with the planet that owns the weekday and follows the Chaldean cycle.

On Thursday it starts with Jupiter, then Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, and then repeats. This order is the same in Chennai, Copenhagen and Toronto.

The difference is the length. In Chennai on 15 January each horai is about 57 minutes. In Copenhagen it is only 38 minutes. The planet order is identical, but the clock time for «Jupiter's hour» is entirely different.

What about moonrise and moonset?

Moonrise and moonset are local for the same reason as sunrise: you see the Moon come over your horizon. On Thursday 15 January the Moon rose at 03:34 in Chennai but not until 06:45 in Copenhagen, over three hours apart.

But the Moon's position, which nakshatra it sits in, is the same everywhere at the same instant. So «the Moon is in Vishakha» holds for everyone. But «the Moon rose at 03:34» holds only for Chennai.

In summer the gap grows

In winter Copenhagen has about seven hours of daylight. Chennai has about eleven. In summer it flips: Copenhagen has over 17 hours of daylight, Chennai still has about 13.

In Chennai a gowri segment ran 86 minutes in winter and 97 in summer, a difference of 11 minutes. In Copenhagen it swings from 58 to 132, a difference of 74 minutes. That is not an error. It is arithmetic.

Today the two windows begin 28 min apart. Copenhagen and Chennai follow the very same rule, only the sunrise differs.

These times are computed from the sun's position for the city.

Five practical rules

  1. Use your own city's sun timings for anything with a clock time: rahu kalam, gowri, horai, nalla neram.
  2. Use an Indian panchangam for tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, they are the same.
  3. Check the festival day in the family calendar. It is almost always the same day worldwide.
  4. When comparing with family, remember that you see the same gowri order, just at different clock times.
  5. If the numbers look strange, check whether daylight saving has shifted the clock.
